The First Seal --- Who Rides the White Horse?

Jesus describes the events leading up to the end of the age in Matthew Chapter 24.  If we compare these events with the seals in the Book of Revelation, much can be gleaned.  There is a color coded chart below which compares the verses in Matthew 24 with the seals of Revelation 6.

Jesus’ first warning in Matthew 24:4-5 is to beware of deception.

It isn’t initially obvious who the rider on the white horse of the first seal is.  Some think he represents Jesus.  Some think he represents the antichrist.  Let’s go on to Jesus’ next warning and then come back and deal with the first seal later when the comparison will be clearer.

Jesus then warns us of wars and rumors of wars in Matthew 24:6-7, and this lines up with the events of the second seal in Revelation 6:3.

His next warning is of famines and earthquakes, and there is a line up with the scarcity of food of the third seal and the famine of the fourth seal of Revelation 6:5-8.

Jesus then warns us of persecution and martyrdom beginning in Matthew 24:9.  There is a very clear line up with the fourth and fifth seals of Revelation 6:7-11.

So we are seeing a matching both in content and sequence between Jesus’ warnings in Matthew 24 and the events of the seals in Revelation 6.  The clincher  which validates the match up is the comparison of the events of  Matthew 24:29 with the nearly identical events of the sixth seal of Revelation 6:12-14.

As we compare the events described in Matthew 24 with the seals of Revelation, we see that there has been a progression from war to famine to persecution/martyrdom and finally to the startling events of the sixth seal.  Now that we have some of the events lined up, we can go back and line up the first seal with Jesus’ first warning to beware of deception.  The logical conclusion then is that the rider on the white horse is a deceiver.  So it should not surprise us that we have some people believing he is Jesus, and some people believing he is the antichrist.  That would be what one would expect from a deception.  Such will be the case when he actually appears on the scene.

Matthew 24:3-31  As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?"

4Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you. 5For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many.

6You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.

There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8All these are the beginning of birth pains.

9"Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. 10At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. 14And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.     15"So when you see standing in the holy place 'the abomination that causes desolation,' spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— 16then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17Let no one on the roof of his house go down to take anything out of the house. 18Let no one in the field go back to get his cloak. 19How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! 20Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. 21For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again. 22If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened. 23At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or, 'There he is!' do not believe it. 24For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect—if that were possible. 25See, I have told you ahead of time.

26"So if anyone tells you, 'There he is, out in the desert,' do not go out; or, 'Here he is, in the inner rooms,' do not believe it. 27For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.

29"Immediately after the distress of those days
" 'the sun will be darkened,
      and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.'

Revelation 6:1-17; I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals.

Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, "Come!" 2I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.

3When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, "Come!" 4Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a large sword.

5When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, "Come!" I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. 6Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, "A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!"

7When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, "Come!" 8I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.

9When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. 10They called out in a loud voice, "How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?" 11Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and brothers who were to be killed as they had been was completed.

12I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as late figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. 14The sky receded like a scroll, rolling up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.
